EcoFlow's newest portable A/C aims to save the day - but will it deliver?

EcoFlow makes sustainable, energy-conscious devices perfect for camping and, potentially, emergencies. The company just announced the launch of its third-generation portable air conditioner and heater, the Wave 3, and a Glacier Classic, a redesigned model of its portable refrigerator.

I've had the Wave 3 for only a full day, so I'm not ready to write a review yet, but it certainly promises a lot. The Wave 3 and Glacier Classic are designed to become your camping companions, whether tent or car camping, using an RV, or testing out van life. They're battery-powered smart devices that support AC, solar, and car charging for convenience during travel.

"We're constantly pushing the boundaries to provide reliable and sustainable energy solutions whether you're on-the-go, at home or anywhere in between," said Brian Essenmacher, EcoFlow's head of North American Business Development. "Our latest smart series builds upon the previous generation and while addressing pain points we see in competing products."

Based on what I've seen so far, this seems to be the case. Temperature control, for one thing, looks very efficient. The Wave 3 can lower the temperature in an enclosed area from 118 to 183 degrees by 15 degrees in 15 minutes and raise it by 17 degrees simultaneously. Its relatively small, 1024Wh LFP battery only offers up to eight hours of cooling in Eco Mode, but portable solar panels could help increase usage time.

Because the EcoFlow Wave 3 is meant to cover small spaces of up to 10 square feet, it's not a backup whole-home A/C or heater for emergencies. This is not meant to be a life-saving device, rather a comfort measure in small spaces, but it could work in a pinch to cool or heat a bedroom during a power outage in extreme weather conditions, for example.

EcoFlow also features a new Pet Care mode, which can be enabled when the Wave 3 is left in a car. If the car temperature exceeds 77 degrees, the device automatically begins cooling to keep furry companions comfortable and sends the user an app notification.

This device is meant for enclosed areas, but EcoFlow says it can be used in tent camping, so I'll also test it out in that scenario ahead of summer. Aside from comfort during camping, I can already see myself using this device to keep a room at a comfortable temperature during a power outage, especially if we pack the entire family in there to escape heat or cold during the night.

Glacier Classic

EcoFlow also launched the Glacier Classic, a three-in-one electric cooler in 35L, 45L, and 55L sizes. The cooler has a removable divider that lets you switch between a single open area or a dual-zone fridge-freezer combo. When not used, the divider doubles as a cutting board and neatly tucks into the cooler lid for storage.

This device can fit up to 90 cans of soda, and its 298Wh battery allows up to 43 hours of cooling on a single charge.

The Wave 3 is available for pre-order for $1,299 on the EcoFlow website, and each extra battery costs $899. The Glacier Classic starts at $799 and is also available for pre-order now.
